...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (1997)
This is actually a great record. Especially for a debut. The energy, raw edges and (especially) the drums all hint for what was to come on the perfection that was Album Number Two, Madonna. Already evident are the gothic images and uniform haircuts that would persist for years to come, yet the sound here has a not-quite-yet formed quality that is really enjoyable.
I wasn't that much of a fan of the later albums, once Conrad got too much time and too much money for recording and began to follow the Beatles too closely. What I have always appreciated when reading interviews is that he had a vision and a plan for the band which was meant to last over a number of years.
This, though, is nice and loud and malformed and fast and scuzzy and relentless. If it came from a new band I'd be raving about it. Because I got into them after their second album, this will always be a (very good) warm-up.
