ACDC - Back in Black

ACDC - Back in Black (1980)

What isn't there to like about this album? Born out of death from vomit inhalation and a hurricane-plagued recording session, this is the ultimate all-killer-no-filler rock classic. 'Back in Black' was apparently the song Kurt Cobain learned to play after getting his first guitar and this was also the album Motorhead used to tune their instruments to. I look through the track listing and can immediately play any of them in my head. Moreover, I was late in getting to like ACDC and thought this was a greatest hits album on first hearing.

What isn't there to like about this album? Some critics would argue that eight of the ten tracks are about as misogynistic as rock music gets. But then this is truly a product of its time and genre. When compared to more modern music (Die Antwoord, for example) what passes for misogyny has an almost old-fashioned 'Carry On' film quality. Should they have known better? Yes. Does it make the music any worse? No.

I was once part of a heated bar debate over which was best: Led Zeppelin or ACDC. I started off arguing the Led Zeppelin side but came around to the points made by the ACDC team. Zeppelin were genius but they never had anything as consistently good as Back In Black.
