Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007)

By all definitions, the Arctic Monkeys are a band I should like. Quite a lot. They're riff-based, don't stick to the same time signatures, have clever lyrics and an excellent rhythm section. But it's only really the final item on that list that interests me.

Matt Helders is an immense drummer. On this album he makes himself known almost from the first second that 'Brainstorm' kicks in with an avalanche of noise. It's really impressive. Which is a shame because it's the only part of the album I really like.

I fully get why people raved about them. The first album was a breath of fresh air in a world where Snow Patrol and Razorlight were filling stadiums. But beyond a happy curiosity, they were never my generation's band. Every album comes out with a decent single or a change of direction yet, for all of Alex Turner's arch observations, I've never seen them as a band to hang your heart on, more something to turn the radio up to now and then.

I listened to this all the way through in the car earlier. It was good but I probably won't bother for another year or two.
